Other than one outburst in the third inning, the Seattle University offense was shut down by UC Davis starter Dayne Quist, and the Aggies took advantage of a fourth-inning error to pull out a 5-3 victory over the Redhawks Friday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, David Popkins hit a home run to right field to give UC Davis a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, Marcelino Morales (Pasco, Wash.) was hit by a pitch, Trent Oleszczuk (Beaverton, Ore.) singled, and Ryan Somers (Sammamish, Wash.) singled to drive in Morales with the Redhawks' first run of the game.
Brian Olson (Black Diamond, Wash.) continued the offensive rally with his own single, bringing in Oleszczuk. Bryndon Ecklund (Elma, Wash.) drove in Somers with a single to right-center field to give Seattle U a 3-1 advantage.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Nate Roberts (Silverdale, Wash.) committed an error that allowed Kevin Barker and Ryan Allgrove to score. Adam Young, who reached base on that error, came around to score thanks to singles by Scott Kalush and Brett Morgan to put the Aggies back on top, 4-3. In the sixth inning, UC Davis added a run when Austin Logan led off with a single, advanced to third on two groundouts, and scored on a single up the middle by Kalush.
UC Davis (7-7) left the rest up to Quist, who set down the final 19 Redhawk batters in order for a complete game victory. Evan Ewing (Spokane, Wash.) took the loss for Seattle U, allowing four hits and two runs, one of them earned, in two innings of work. Ewing came on in relief of starter Bryan Dalton (Vancouver, Wash.), who allowed two hits, two walks, and three runs, plus he hit two Aggie batters, in 3 2/3 innings on the mound.
Oleszczuk went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored, but nobody below the fourth batter in the order was able to get a hit off Quist. Kalush went 3-for-4 with a run batted in, while Barker finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Seattle University (8-6) will continue the three-game series against UC Davis, sending Grant Gunning (Snohomish, Wash.) to the mound to start Saturday's game against the Aggies, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The start time for Sunday's game has been moved up to 12 noon to give Seattle U time to complete its travel plans for the weekend.
