The Seattle University men's swim team set five pool records, winning seven events to defeat Simon Fraser, 116-88, Friday night at the Connolly Center Pool.
Murray Longbotham (Mercer Island, Wash.) set pool records in both the 200 freestyle (1:40.41) and the 500 freestyle (4:37.45) as he cruised to victory in both events. He also swam the second leg of the 200 freestyle relay, joining with Jordan Anderson (Newberg, Ore.), Keith Andrews (Hillsboro, Ore.), and Tyler Carriker (Everett, Wash.) to post a pool-record time of 1:23.33, winning the event by over three seconds.
Anderson also posted a pool record individually, cutting 2/100ths of a second of his own pool-record time in the 100 freestyle, winning that event by almost three full seconds with a time of 45.73 seconds. Joe Wertz (Richland, Wash.) set the other pool record of the evening, needing his time of 1:49.94 to pull out victory in the 200 backstroke.
Andrews and Carriker finished 1-2 in the 50 freestyle, with Andrews finishing first in 21.76 seconds, followed closely by Carriker with a time of 21.98 seconds. James Gilmore (Eugene, Ore.) finished ahead of Wertz in the 200 individual medley, with Gilmore touching the wall with a time of 1:53.06 and Wertz posting a time of 1:53.67.
"It was a great job tonight, and I was very impressed," Seattle U head coach Craig Nisgor said. "There is not much more you can say about Murray's times, they speak for themselves. Joe and Jordan gave great performances as well. Now we need to get ready for tomorrow."
Simon Fraser got off to a solid start, winning the 200 medley relay by just 14/100ths of a second over the Redhawk team of Andrews, Chris Lynch (Melbourne, Australia), Anderson, and Carriker. Kevin Nickerson won the 1000 freestyle (9:55.75), Ciaran McDonnell was victorious in the 200 butterfly (1:52.87), and Julian Monks added a victory in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.95) to his win as part of the 200 medley relay team.
Seattle University and Simon Fraser will have a rematch Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Connolly Center Pool. Before the 12 noon scheduled start of the meet, Senior Day ceremonies will take place at approximately 11:40 a.m.
