The Seattle University volleyball team was competitive with Pacific, especially in the second set, but the Tigers were able to earn a 3-0 victory (25-13, 29-27, 25-12) Friday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
Kaytlyn Dill (Bothell, Wash.) led the Redhawks with eight kills, plus she earned seven digs and four block assists. Cristin Richards (Tumwater, Wash.) finished with four kills, 10 digs, and two total blocks, Jordan Keller (Mukilteo, Wash.) earned five total blocks, and Allie Hoskins (Colorado Springs, Colo.) paced the backline with 14 defensive digs.
"We played one really good, hard-fought game. When we serve tough, it makes a big difference. Allie played good defense in the back row, but we were not aggressive enough on offense," head coach Shannon Ellis said.
After the first set got away from Seattle U thanks to Pacific scoring runs of 5-0 and 9-2, two kills by Jennifer Sanders and a service ace from Rebekah Torres helped the Tigers score the first four points of the second set. Seattle U responded with a 9-2 run of its own to pull ahead, 11-7, but a 5-1 Tiger scoring run tied the set at 12-12.
Down 16-15, Pacific outscored Seattle U, 6-1, thanks in part to a kill and consecutive service aces by Samantha Misa. Back-to-back kills from Richards and a service ace by Megan Augustavo (Shoreline, Wash.) gave the Redhawks a 23-22 advantage. Pacific scored four of the final five points in the set, three of them on kills by Misa.
Misa started off the third set with two kills and a service ace as Pacific took a 7-1 lead. The Tigers slowly pulled away throughout the set, eventually scoring the final five points, with Sanders and Torres closing out the match with back-to-back kills.
Misa earned 12 kills, three service aces, and 13 digs, while Sanders finished with 11 kills and Megan Birch contributed 10 kills. Hannah Clancy ran a solid offense, collecting 36 assists to go with four kills, two service aces, and 11 digs, and Koala Matsuoka led all players with 17 defensive digs.
Seattle University (5-21) closes out the 2011 season with a match at Saint Mary's Saturday, Nov. 26, beginning at 2 p.m.
