Despite Jordan Anderson (Newberg, Ore.) winning the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle for the second straight day and Murray Longbotham (Mercer Island, Wash.) winning the 200 freestyle again, the Seattle University men's swim squad could not put everything together for a team victory, losing to CSU Bakersfield (147-115), Air Force (136-126), and host Pacific (157-105) at Kjeldsen Pool.
Anderson was the only swimmer to finish the 50 freestyle in less than 21 seconds, posting a time of 20.89 seconds. He then came from behind to defeat CSUB's Chris Pipes and win the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.29 seconds, 8/100ths of a second ahead of Pipes. The senior also nearly repeated his comeback performance from the previous day's medley relay, anchoring the Redhawk 400 medley relay quartet to a second place finish in 3:27.45, only 34/100ths of a second behind Air Force's team, with Anderson cutting a second-and-a-half off the deficit he faced when he dove into the water.
Longbotham also came from behind in his victory, winning the 200 freestyle by passing CSUB's Gabriel Bertrand in the final 50 yards to post a time of 1:42.79. Longbotham was the third leg in the 400 medley relay team, finished third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:41.85 and was the third leg in the 400 freestyle relay, joining with Anderson, Tomas Mendez-Beck (Hillsboro, Ore.), and James Gilmore (Eugene, Ore.) to finish third with a time of 3:09.44.
Chris Lynch (Melbourne, Australia) and Gilmore finished 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke, with Lynch touching the wall first with a time of 2:08.57, followed by Gilmore with a time of 2:09.00. Lynch, the second leg in the second-place 400 medley relay, also finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.64 seconds.
Gilmore also finished third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:56.77, ahead of teammate Joe Wertz (Richland, Wash.) in fourth place in 1:57.35. Earlier in the meet, Wertz was the opening leg for the 400 medley relay team that finished second, plus he finished fifth in the 100 backstroke in 52.73 seconds and third in the 200 backstroke in 1:55.23.
In the 200 butterfly, Mendez-Beck finished third with a time of 1:56.83, just ahead of Kyle Moline (Mercer Island, Wash.) in fourth place in 1:56.95 and Eric Pedack (Snohomish, Wash.) in fifth place in 1:57.00.
The Seattle University men's swim team is back in action next weekend, facing Denver, Utah, and Colorado School of Mines Saturday, Nov. 12, in Denver, Colo., beginning at 10 a.m. local time.
