The Seattle University men's tennis team earned two first-round victories as play began Friday in the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Tournament, hosted by the University of Washington at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.

Andrew Anderson (Tacoma, Wash.) earned a three-set victory over Kyle Koetje of Eastern Washington (6-3, 1-6, 6-2), while Simon Meske (Tacoma, Wash.) was victorious over Stefan Simikic of Eastern Washington, also in three sets (7-6, 0-6, 7-5). However, both players fell in second-round matches, with Anderson losing to Emmett Egger of Washington and Meske losing to Ben McLachlan of California, both in straight sets by the same score (6-0, 6-1).

Other Seattle U players were competitive in their first-round contests. Flavio Malagutti (Rio Claro, Brazil) won the first set in his match before dropping the next two sets to Gonzaga's Vladimir Mijatovic (3-6, 7-5, 7-5), while Mark Shkrebtan (Redmond, Wash.) forced a third set before falling to Josh Albert of UC Davis (6-3, 6-7, 6-4). Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) forced tiebreakers in both sets against UC Davis's George Horowitz before losing (7-6 (5), 7-6 (4)), and Yusuke Kanehira (Tokyo, Japan) lost his match to Julien Sanchez of Eastern Washington (6-1, 6-4).

Seattle University will look to advance in the main doubles bracket as well as in the consolation singles bracket when competition resumes Saturday.
