Weekly Release #2: Idaho and Washington State

This Week for the Redhawks: After going a perfect 2-0 to open up the year, the Seattle University women's soccer team travels eastbound for a pair of matches. The Redhawks face Idaho (0-0-2) on Friday, Aug. 26, in a 4:30 p.m. game in Moscow. Two days later, SU will square off with Washington State in Pullman. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

Last Time Out: The Redhawks put together a successful season-opening weekend in California, going 2-0. Behind Jordan Salisbury's golden goal, SU defeated Sacramento State 2-1 in overtime on Aug. 19. Freshman Stephanie Verdoia scored her first career goal to open up Seattle U's offensive attack.

SU concluded the weekend with a 1-0 shutout at UC Davis. Sophomore Kat Prati scored the game-winner off a Megan Daniels deflection. Senior goalkeeper Madison Goverde was spectacular in goal, tallying five saves and her first clean sheet of the year.

Road Warriors: SU currently is amidst a 10-game road swing. They will only play five games at Championship Field this season.

The Woodward Tally: Head coach Julie Woodward currently boasts 196 career victories at Seattle University. She is 196-72-25 all-time and is the winningest coach in SU women's soccer history.

Strong Freshmen Debuts: Stephanie Verdoia, the only newcomer to start this past weekend, made an immediate impact. The midfielder scored her first career goal to give SU an early lead at Sacramento State on Aug. 19. Classmates Megan Daniels and Taylor Ritzman also made their debuts and saw action in both contests off the bench.

The Captains: Senior goalkeeper Madison Goverde and senior defender Renee Vandermause will captain the 2011 Redhawk squad.

Makin' the Save: Senior goalkeeper Madison Goverde brought her career save total to 213, behind five saves this past weekend. Goverde posted all five saves in her first clean sheet victory, 1-0, over UC Davis on Aug. 21.

Prati Named Featured Student-Athlete of the Week: Sophomore midfielder Kat Prati was selected the first SU Featured Student-Athlete of Week for the 2011-12 school year. She assisted on Stephanie Verdoia's game-opening goal at Sac State on Aug. 19, and scored the game-winner in SU's 1-0 shutout over UC Davis (Aug. 21).

Final Year of Independence: 2011 will mark SU's final season playing as an NCAA DI Independent. On July 1, 2012 Seattle U will officially join the Western Athletic Conference as full members.

Scouting Idaho: Idaho hosts their home opener versus the Redhawks following a pair of 1-1 double overtime draws to open the year. UI kicked things off with UCSB (Aug. 19) and concluded the weekend with UC Riverside (Aug. 21).

Bailey Hewitt and Chelsea Small lead the squad with a goal apiece. Goalkeeper Liz Boyden has seen action in all 220 minutes between the pipes, tallying 18 saves thus far.

The Last Time Seattle U Faced Idaho: The Redhawks snapped the Vandals six-game win streak with a 2-1 victory on Oct. 15, 2010. Emma Levy assisted on Kara Kuttler's early goal and went on to score the game-winner in the 76th minute.

Scouting Washington State: Washington State hosts the Redhawks following a Friday match up with the nationally ranked Pilots of Portland. The Cougars are 1-0, behind a 3-1 victory over Hawaii to open the season on Aug. 19.

Eileen Maes scored all three WSU goals in the contest. Defensively, keeper Gurveen Clair posted three saves in the victory.

The Last Time Seattle U Faced Washington State: The Redhawks last met the Cougars on Oct. 11, 2009. SU was edged 3-2, seeing goals from Kara Kuttler and Jordan Salisbury.
