Junior Ty Jaros (Eugene, Ore.), a member of the Seattle University track and field team, has been voted Capital One Second Team Academic All-District VIII, University Division, by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), announced Thursday by the national organization.

In 2011, Jaros enjoyed a successful indoor season before injuries limited him during the outdoor campaign. At the UW Open Feb. 13 at Dempsey Indoor, Jaros set the school record in the triple jump with a leap of 13.50 meters. He also cleared 1.73 meters in the high jump at the same meet.

Jaros was one of Seattle U's top scorers at the 2011 Great West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. He finished fourth in the triple jump, further extending his own school record out to 13.51 meters. Jaros also finished fifth in the high jump by clearing a height of 1.85 meters and earned a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a top effort of 6.50 meters.

"Ty has had a difficult time staying healthy, but when he is, he's on fire," head coach Trisha Steidl said. "He's a talented individual and a hard worker, both in athletics and academics, and I'm happy to see that he is being highlighted with this award. He is very deserving of the recognition."

Jaros currently carries one of the highest grade point averages among all Seattle U student-athletes with a 3.939 GPA. He is double majoring in economics and general science with biology and chemistry concentrations. Jaros earned Academic All-Great West recognition in 2010.

"Ty has been a great asset to our team, although injuries have been plaguing him recently. With the plan we have in place, I full expect him to produce on the track, just as much as he continually performs in the classroom," assistant coach Chad Pharis said.

The 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-District® Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance in competition and in the classroom.
