BYU (24-21) jumped on the board in the second inning, loading the bases on singles by Alex Wolfe and Alex Hancock as well as a walk drawn by Dillon Robinson. Stephen Wells' fly ball was misread by Redhawk left fielder Doug Kincaid (Portland, Ore.), dropping to the ground behind him and allowing all three BYU runners to come around and score. Wells would come home on a single by Dane Nielsen to give the Cougars a 4-0 advantage.
The Redhawks broke through in the fifth inning when Josh Kalalau (University Place, Wash.) led off with a single. As Kalalau took off for second, Jace Sloan (Puyallup, Wash.) blooped a double into left field, allowing Kalalau to come around and score Seattle U's first run of the game. Ryan Somers (Sammamish, Wash.) laced a 3-1 pitch over the head of right fielder Jaycob Brugman for a triple, driving in Sloan to bring Seattle U within two at 4-2.
Seattle U put together a scoring threat in the sixth inning, as Trent Oleszczuk (Beaverton, Ore.) led off with a single and Kincaid followed with his own single that put runners on first and third with one out. However, Kincaid was cut down trying to steal second base, and Kalalau struck out to end the Redhawk scoring chance and keep BYU in the lead.
The Cougars extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Austin Hall drew a leadoff walk, stole second base, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Robinson hit a chopper over the drawn-in infield to score Hall and increase BYU's lead to 5-2.
The Redhawks again cut into the Cougar lead in the seventh inning, as Riley Tompkins (Lynnwood, Wash.) drew a leadoff walk and eventually advanced to third base. A two-out single up the middle by Bryndon Ecklund (Elma, Wash.) brought in Tompkins, but a groundout by Oleszczuk ended the Seattle U rally. A two-run home run by Hall kicked off a five-run eighth inning to help the Cougars put the game away.
BYU starter Desmond Poulson set down the first 12 Seattle U batters in order on the way to his fourth victory of the season, allowing five hits, one walk, and three runs in 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Justin Shutt picked up his second save of the season, completing 2 1/3 innings of perfect relief with four strikeouts.
Seattle University (18-24) returns home and begins a six-game homestand Tuesday, May 10, with the first of two games against the Oregon Ducks, with Tuesday's game taking place at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, Wash., starting at 6 p.m.
