Down 2-1 heading into the seventh inning, the Redhawks received a leadoff single from pinch hitter Marcelino Morales (Pasco, Wash.), followed by Trent Oleszczuk (Beaverton, Ore.) getting hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by Cullen Hendrickson (Auburn, Wash.) put runners on second and third, Doug Kincaid (Portland, Ore.) hit a ground ball to first base, but Oleszczuk put himself into a rundown, allowing Morales to score the tying run. With runners still on second and third, Josh Kalalau's (University Place, Wash.) fly ball to center field drove in Oleszczuk to give the Redhawks a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Cougars took advantage of control issues by Redhawk reliever Conor Spink (Eagle River, Alaska), as he hit both Jaycob Brugman and Alex Wolfe with a pitch. Spink then fielded a bunt by Austin Hall, but his indecisiveness allowed everyone to advance safely, loading the bases, and pinch hitter Chase Frampton drove in Brugman with a sacrifice fly that tied the game at 3-3.
As the game advanced to extra innings, Seattle U put the first two batters on base in the 10th inning, but an unsuccessful sacrifice bunt, a strikeout, and a groundout ended the Redhawk scoring threat. With one out in the bottom of the 11th inning, Wells took a 1-2 pitch from Bryan Dalton (Vancouver, Wash.) over the wall in right-center field for his third home run of the season.
BYU (22-21) struck quickly in the bottom of the first inning, as Dane Nielsen sent a line drive over the head of Kincaid in left field for a double, and Wolfe followed with a two-out single to right field to score Nielsen. A double by Jace Sloan (Puyallup, Wash.) and walks drawn by Ryan Somers (Sammamish, Wash.), Riley Tompkins (Lynnwood, Wash.), and Oleszczuk in the second inning brought Seattle U into a 1-1 tie.
The Cougars retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brugman hit a home run that glanced off the top of the right field wall before disappearing to the other side of the wall. That would be the last run allowed by Seattle U starter Seafth Howe (Seattle, Wash.), who gave up seven hits, two walks, and two runs in six innings of work while striking out three Cougars.
BYU starter Chris Capper struggled with his control, giving up seven hits and five walks in 6 1/3 innings on the mound, striking out five Redhawks. However, Seattle U left runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, plus let Capper off the hook in the sixth thanks to a double play and a baserunning mistake that accounted for the final out of the inning.
Matthew Neil came on in relief in the seventh inning and completed 2 2/3 innings of two-hit relief to keep BYU in the game. Mark Anderson earned his second victory of the season after striking out two Redhawk batters while allowing just one hit in two innings of work. Dalton had pitched well for Seattle U before giving up the home run, keeping the Cougars off the scoreboard in the ninth and 10th innings to extend the game.
