BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Seattle University men’s and women’s hammer throw records both fell on Saturday, April 23 at the Western Washington Twilite Meet in Bellingham, Wash.
Bethany Richards (Shoreline, Wash.) finished third in the hammer throw with a distance of 40 meters (131-3), outdistancing the previous record by nearly five feet. Josh Walters (Sacramento, Calif.) placed seventh on the men’s side with a throw of 43.5 meters (142-8), which also became the new school record. Brandan Haggarty (Missoula, Mont.) also competed in the men’s hammer throw with a distance of 41.53 meters (136-3).
Richards also finished fourth in the shot put with a distance of 11.54 meters (37-10.5) and set a personal record in the discus with a distance of 33.75 meters (110-9). She was joined in the field events by Sara Blakely (Spokane, Wash.), who finished fifth and set personal records in the shot put (11.36 meters), discus (36.27 meters), and hammer throw (37.75 meters).
Representing the Redhawks in the jumps, Nick Bever (Seattle, Wash.) set a personal record in the long jump with a distance of 6.15 meters (20-2.25) and placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.51 meters (41-0.5).
In running events, Samuel Engle (Portland, Ore.) finished fifth in the 110 meter hurdles in 17.71 and competed in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.93. Jude Martinez (Hagatna, Guam) ran the 400 meter dash in 53.33 for eighth place.
The Redhawks will travel to Spokane, Wash. for the Duane Hartman Memorial on April 30 for their next competition.
