The freshman tandem played a major role in Seattle U's sixth-straight victory, first winning their doubles set, 8-2, to help the Redhawks win the doubles point, and then both players going on to win their respective singles matches by earning two more points to give SU a 5-2 victory over Portland State.
At number three singles, Weissmann pulled out a first-set tiebreaker before winning the second set without losing a game. Lucas cruised in her match at the number five singles position, losing only three games.
"It's really rewarding, as this award goes to two women who have fought through a tough season. They are extremely competitive and have done a great job over the past two weeks in Las Vegas and Portland," head coach Mark Frisby said. "They are valuable links to the team and outstanding young women who work extremely hard. It's great that the team is recognized again in this way."
The duo has posted an 11-8 doubles record during the 2011 dual match season, including victories over teams from Northern Colorado (twice), Gonzaga, Eastern Washington, Southern Utah, Idaho State and San Jose State. Their honor follows on the heels of Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) being named conference player of the week last week.
The Seattle University women's tennis team is preparing for the Great West Conference Championship Tournament, to be held April 30-May 1 in Chicago, Ill.
