Seattle, Wash. –
The doubles point was the difference as the University of Portland women’s tennis team was able to defeat Seattle University, 4-3, at the Seattle U tennis courts Sunday afternoon.
After a loss at the number one doubles position, Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) and Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) were able to even out the competition with an 8-6 victory over Stephanie Fuchs and Emily Mahairas in the number two position, but Beate Valdmane and Gabrielle Gorence took the number three victory with a win over Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.), 8-3.
The Pilots and Redhawks split the singles competition. In the number two position, Schwab followed her doubles win with a victory over Sabine Fuchs (6-2, 6-2). Portland took the next two spots, but Seattle U was able to grab the final two points in the number five and six positions with Anna Lambert’s (Spokane, Wash.) win over Gorence (6-0, 4-3 retired) and Wurden’s decisive win over Mahairas (6-1, 6-1).
