Whieldon (0-2) suffered the loss despite allowing only one hit and one earned run in seven innings of work, walking four and striking out five Notre Dame batters. In the third inning, Alex Robinson led off with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, reached third on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Herman Petzold.
Josh Kalalau (University Place, Wash.) went 2-for-4 with two doubles, the only player for either team to earn multiple hits in the game. He led off the fourth inning with his first double and advanced to third with one out, but was stranded there. He earned his second double of the game in the sixth inning, but did not advance any further as Notre Dame starter Brian Dupra struck out the next two batters.
Notre Dame (3-1) earned some insurance runs in the eighth inning, as Joe Hudson's double to right-center field scored Robinson and Eric Jagielo, and Trey Mancini followed with a two-run home run over the right field wall. The Fighting Irish threatened to extend their lead further in the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out, but the Seattle U relievers were able to get the final two outs without allowing any runs.
Seattle U attempted to get on the scoreboard in the ninth inning, as Ryan Somers (Sammamish, Wash.) drew a leadoff walk and Doug Kincaid (Portland, Ore.) laced a one-out single to right-center field. However, the Redhawks could not drive either runner home as they left eight runners stranded on base during the afternoon.
Dupra (1-1) earned the victory for Notre Dame, allowing only four hits and one walk in six innings of work while striking out 11 batters. Three relievers helped preserve the shutout for the Fighting Irish, who extended their winning streak to three games.
Seattle University (2-3) will face Notre Dame in a doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 26, at Husky Ballpark, with the first game beginning at 12 noon. Live stats and live audio for the games will be available on GoSeattleU.com.
