Seattle U picked up the doubles point with two 8-2 victories, first from Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) and Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) at the number two doubles position over Jill Kappel and Jennifer Buchanan. Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) clinched the match's first point with a victory over Stephanie Catlin and Adriana Nieto.
Schwab defeated Jennifer Whateley in straight sets in the number one singles position (6-0, 6-3), while Lucas picked up a victory over Kappel in the number four singles position, also in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). In the number two singles spot, Steffanie Mortera (Portland, Ore) stayed right with Nieto before falling in straight sets (7-5, 6-4).
Weissmann had a chance to pick up the first set in her match at the number three singles position over Elizabeth Tapia, but she lost the tiebreaker, 12-10, and fell in straight sets (7-6 (12-10), 6-1). Wurden won the first set in her match against Buchanan, but the Northern Colorado player was able to come from behind for a three-set victory (0-6, 6-4, 6-0) and help the Bears win the overall match.
Seattle University (1-6) takes the next two weeks off before a weekend trip to El Paso, Texas, and Las Cruces, N.M., to face UTEP, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, and Northern Colorado in a rematch Feb. 18-20.
