Freshman guard Sterling Carter (Seattle, Wash.) hit seven three-pointers, the most by a Seattle University player in over four years, but it was not enough as the Pepperdine Waves pulled away to an 84-64 victory Sunday afternoon at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Carter went 7-of-15 from behind the three-point arc as well as 5-of-6 from the free throw line in collecting 28 points, the most by a Redhawk player in a single game this season. The seven long distance baskets by Carter were the most by a Seattle U player since Sam Kirby made seven three-pointers against Ashland University on Nov. 18, 2006.

Carter made two free throws and a three-pointer in the first minute of the second half as the Redhawks took a 45-43 lead. However, Pepperdine scored nine unanswered points over the next four-and-a-half minutes to take the lead for good.

The Waves extended their lead to 61-50 with 9:41 left in the second half when the Redhawks made a run, thanks to back-to-back three-pointers by Carter and a layup from Alex Jones (Phoenix, Ariz.), to come within three at 61-58. A layup by Gus Clardy and a traditional three-point play from Lorne Jackson started the Waves on a 23-6 scoring run in the last eight minutes of the contest.

Pepperdine (6-11) scored seven unanswered points to open a 9-2 lead four minutes into the game. The Waves extended their lead to as many as 12 points in the first half thanks to solid field goal shooting, as the home team hit 15 of its first 26 shots from the field, including four three-pointers.

Down by 10 with 4:12 left in the first half, the Redhawks started their comeback with a basket by Aaron Broussard (Federal Way, Wash.), followed by a three-pointer from Carter with 3:01 remaining before halftime. After a three-point play by Mychel Thompson, Carter nailed his fourth three-pointer of the first half, Jones made two free throws, and Broussard hit a jumper to bring Seattle U to within one, 41-40, at halftime.

Broussard finished the game with 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Jones contributed 10 points before fouling out with three minutes left in the game. As a team, Seattle U shot only 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field, including 11-of-27 from behind the three-point line, and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the free throw line.

Both Jackson and Thompson notched double-doubles, with Jackson earning 23 points and 10 assists and Thompson finishing with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Pepperdine shot 50.9 percent (29-of-57) from the field, including 5-of-12 from behind the three-point line, and 84 percent (21-of-25) from the free throw line.

Seattle University (5-11) heads home for the start of the winter quarter as well as the only two home games in January next weekend. The Redhawks welcome Eastern Washington to KeyArena at Seattle Center next Thursday, Jan. 6, and Cal State Northridge next Saturday, Jan. 8, with both games tipping off at 7:10 p.m. Tickets are available for both games through Ticketmaster, and the contests will be broadcast on 710 ESPN Seattle with Dave Grosby and Gary Hill, Jr., at courtside.
