The Seattle University men's tennis team battled right to the end of a five-hour tennis marathon, but Gonzaga was able to earn the deciding match to pull out a 4-3 victory Thursday night at the Sammamish Club in the dual match opener for the Redhawks.

Veterans Mark Shkretbtan (Redmond, Wash.) and Simon Meske (Tacoma, Wash.) won their matches in straight sets, with Shkretbtan winning in the number four singles position over Zhia Hwa Chong (6-4, 6-4) and Meske earning the victory in the number five singles position over Pablo Mosquera Perez (6-2, 6-3). Andrew Anderson (Tacoma, Wash.) picked up Seattle U's other point in the number two singles position with a straight-set victory over Kevin Eischen (6-4, 6-0).

Gonzaga (1-0) clinched the victory when Jake Davis squeaked past Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.), winning the second set in a tiebreaker, 8-6, for a straight-set victory (6-4, 7-6). Levin Guillermo defeated David Kovas (South Bend, Ind.) in the number one singles position (6-4, 6-0), and Scott Sullivan earned a straight-set victory over Matt Overland (Renton, Wash.) in the number three singles slot (6-4, 6-4).

The Bulldogs started off the night by winning the doubles point, taking two of the three hard-fought doubles sets. Eischen and Mosquera Perez defeated Meske and Bediones in the number two doubles slot, 8-5, while Davis and Muzeen Ismath earned an 8-6 victory over Anderson and Overland in the number three doubles position. Kovas teamed with Jordan Prince (Hansville, Wash.) for an 8-6 victory over Chong and Sullivan in the number one doubles position.

Seattle University (0-1) will next compete in two weeks, heading to Colorado Springs, Colo., for matches against Northern Colorado (Jan. 28) and Air Force (Jan. 30).
