Thanks to a career-high scoring performance by Cervante Burrell (Sacramento, Calif.) and clutch three-point shooting by newcomers Sterling Carter (Seattle, Wash.) and Chad Rasmussen (University Place, Wash.), Seattle University earned its first victory of the 2010-11 season, defeating Oregon State for the second consecutive year, 83-80, Tuesday night at KeyArena at Seattle Center.

Burrell shot 7-of-14 from the field and 8-of-8 from the free throw line to finish with 22 points, plus he earned five rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Carter hit five three-pointers on his way to a 20-point performance, and Aaron Broussard (Federal Way, Wash.) made contributions all over the court, contributing nine points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

"I was proud of our guys that through mistakes, they kept being aggressive and trying to make things happen," head coach Cameron Dollar said. "Cervante and Aaron were some of the players who responded and played aggressively. We competed tonight, but now we need to keep going, get tougher and continue to grow."

Down 64-52 with 11:17 left in the second half, Seattle U started the comeback with an offensive rebound and putback by Broussard, followed by six straight Redhawk points by Burrell. With 5:46 remaining in regulation, Rasmussen was fouled as he converted on a three-point shot, hitting the free throw to tie the game at 66-66.

After Oregon State regained the lead, 69-66, Alex Jones (Phoenix, Ariz.) was successful on an old-fashioned three-point play, then was fouled again and made both free throws with 4:34 left to give the Redhawks the lead for good. A three-pointer by Carter and a layup from Jones helped extend the lead to seven points, and Seattle U was able to hold on over the final three minutes to collect the victory.

Oregon State (1-1) had a chance to tie the game and send it into overtime after Carter made one-of-two free throws. The Seattle U defense took over, as Carter took the ball away from Calvin Haynes, forcing the Beavers' 21st turnover of the game as the crowd of 4.526 rose to its feet and saluted the Redhawks' effort.

Carter started the game by hitting back-to-back three-pointers in the first 34 seconds to give Seattle U an early 6-2 lead, but Oregon State responded, resulting in a back-and-forth first half that saw six ties and nine lead changes. The Redhawks' biggest lead in the first half was seven at 30-23, but a 10-2 Beaver run brought the visitors right back into the contest, and the half ended in a 43-43 tie.

Four players scored in double figures for the Beavers, led by 19 points, two blocked shots, and five steals by Jared Cunningham and 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists from Haynes. Omari Johnson notched a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Lathen Wallace contributed 13 points to the effort.

Seattle U shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the field and 73.5 percent (25-of-34) from the free throw line, plus won the rebounding battle, 45-40. On the other side, Oregon State shot 42.2 percent (27-of-64) from the field and 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the free throw line.
