In the Purple singles main draw, Mark Shkretbtan (Redmond, Wash.) defeated Vetu Mam of Portland State in the first round in straight sets (6-1, 6-0). After losing in the main draw, David Kovas (South Bend, Ind.) earned a hard-fought victory over Kevin Eischen of Gonzaga in the quarterfinals of the consolation draw, with the first two sets going to tiebreakers and the super-tiebreaker taking 18 points (6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 10-8).
In his first collegiate tennis matches, freshman Matt Overland (Renton, Wash.) won twice in the Gold singles main draw, defeating Jake Davis of Gonzaga (6-2, 6-3) and Duncan MacDonald-Korth of Oregon (6-4, 2-6, 7-5) to advance to the quarterfinals. Andrew Anderson (Tacoma, Wash.) earned a first-round victory over James Russell of Eastern Washington, coming back from losing the first set to win the next two sets and the match (4-6, 6-2, 6-2).
Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) made a run in the consolation draw, defeating Nick Wales of Portland (6-2, 7-6 (4)) and Matt Erickson of Portland State (6-4, 7-5) to reach the finals before dropping a three-set contest to Russell (6-4, 5-7, 10-7).
The Seattle University men's tennis team opens the spring season at the University of Oregon Saturday, Jan. 15, before hosting Gonzaga Sunday, Jan. 16, at a site to be determined.
