Weissmann started her run Friday with a straight-set victory over Kelly Humphrey of Gonzaga (6-2, 6-1). Saturday, she defeated Rocio Norena of Eastern Washington in straight sets (6-1, 6-0), followed by a three-set victory over Judy Liening of Eastern Washington (6-4, 2-6, 6-4). In Sunday's final, Weissmann fell to Gabrielle Verspieren of Gonzaga in straight sets (7-5, 6-1), but she became the first Seattle U player to reach the finals of a main draw since the tennis program was reestablished in 2007.
In the same draw, Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) won her opening round match over Gonzaga's Jackie Tabb (6-1, 3-6, 6-2). After losing in the quarterfinals of the main draw, Lucas earned a straight-set victory over Norena in the consolation bracket (6-1, 6-2). After losing in the first round, freshman Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) made her way through the consolation bracket, defeating Jessica Steele of Eastern Washington (6-4, 6-2) and Humphrey (6-2, 6-3).
Also in flight B consolation play, Natalie Martin (Phoenix, Ariz.) came back from being shutout in the first set to defeat Steele in three sets (0-6, 6-2, 10-5). Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) posted a straight-set victory over Madeline Parker of Gonzaga (6-2, 6-2) and also earned a victory over Alix Silha of Eastern Washington.
In doubles action, Ariel Ohno (Kent, Wash.) and Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) reached the semifinals of the main draw, defeating Parker and Britta Stime Friday afternoon, 8-0, and Verspieren and Danielle Farmer Saturday morning, 8-4, before losing a tough 8-6 set to Molly Knox and Yvette Ly of Idaho. Ohno and Schwab earned a win Sunday morning over Silvia Irimescu and Jana Siwa of Idaho, 8-4, to finish in third place in the bracket.
Lucas and Weissmann defeated Nefeli Diamanti and Judy Liening of Eastern Washington, 8-5, and Tabb and Sophie Lantta of Gonzaga, 8-4, before losing in a consolation final Sunday morning. Lambert and Wurden defeated Norena and Silha, 8-2, as well as Clare Dodge and Kristina Zauere of Gonzaga, 8-7 (4), to win that consolation final.
In flight A consolation play, Steffanie Mortera (Portland, Ore.) defeated Diamanti in straight sets (6-2, 6-0) and Ryann Warner of Eastern Washington in a come-from-behind three-set battle (1-6, 7-6 (7), 10-7). Mortera lost to Rika Mehndiratta of Gonzaga in that consolation final, 8-2. Schwab did pick up a singles victory over Chelsea Patton of Eastern Washington, 8-4.
The Seattle U women's tennis team will not compete against outside competition again until the dual-match season begins in January. The spring season will culminate with the Great West Conference Tournament in Chicago, Ill., April 30 and May 1.
