Sophomore Carlee Norquist's (Boise, Idaho) golden goal in the 106th minute helped guide the Seattle University women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout victory over Cal State Bakersfield Friday evening in Bakersfield, Calif. After battling through three scoreless periods and much of the final overtime period, the Redhawks' Emma Levy (Sammamish, Wash.) found Norquist in the middle of the box. Norquist shot the ball into the lower right corner of the goal to guide Seattle U to their 10th victory of the season. With the win, SU improves to 10-5-2, while the host Roadrunners fell to 4-7-5.

"We controlled the ball for a large portion of the game," said head coach Julie Woodward. "I thought our forwards of Kara (Kuttler) and Emma did a good job and played well up top for us. Their 'keeper made some good saves, but it was one of those games that we played well and I felt like we were going be able to see the back of the net at some point."

"In the second overtime period the wind picked up and had a little to do with our attack. We were fortunate to be able to score, since we were facing the wind head on. It was an impressive individual effort from Emma, who controlled the ball and found Carlee in the middle. Carlee was composed and was able to score the game-winner for us," commented Woodward.

The Redhawks immediately took offensive control in the first half, outshooting CSUB 6-2, with a shot on goal. Seattle U pushed the ball into the Roadrunner half and maintained possession, but they were unable to find solid shots on target to get on the board.

In the second half, Bakersfield's Kassi Massey fired off a shot minutes into the period to ignite the Roadrunner offense. Despite the immediate offensive flair from the host team, the Redhawk defense remained composed and deflected all of the CSU Bakersfield offensive attempts. On the other end of the field, Seattle U tallied five shots in the half. In the final minutes of regulation the Redhawks bombarded the Roadrunner goal. Levy fired off three shots and Heather Thomas (Woodinville, Wash.) added one, but the tandem's firing attack could not send the ball into the back of the net, which sent the game into overtime.

In the first overtime period, freshman Monique Escalera (Riverside, Calif.) was credited with the only shot in the period. She sent in a shot in the 93rd minute, but CSUB's goalkeeper Kym Gause was able to get her gloves on it. Following the Redhawk newcomer's shot, both sides were unable to get any other offensive push to send the game into double overtime.

Seattle U took control instantaneously in the final period of the game. Julia Besagno (Maple Valley, Wash.) sent in a shot wide of the goal at the 103:45 minute mark. Just over two minutes later, Levy took the ball, controlled it and moved it past the Bakersfield defense to find Norquist, who scored a thrilling double overtime game-winning goal. The goal was her first of the season.

In the game, SU outshot CSUB 14-6, with three shots on goal to the Roadrunner's pair. Thomas led both sides with four shots. Madison Goverde (Snohomish, Wash.) posted her 10th win in goal and fifth shutout this season. The SU backline of Nance Hill (Mercer Island, Wash.), Mary Hill (Mercer Island, Wash.), Norquist, Jordan Salisbury (Federal Way, Wash.) and Renee Vandermause (Colbert, Wash.) were in sync all evening. They were a great defensive wall, allowing CSUB to only tally two shots on target in the 106 minute contest.

The Redhawks will close out their six game road swing on Sunday, Oct. 31, at CSU Northridge. First kick is set for 1 p.m.
