After a top ten performance at the Kauai Collegiate Invitational earlier this week at the Puakea Golf Course in Lihue, Hawaii, sophomore Preston Matchett (Billings, Mont.) has been named the America Sky Men's Golf Conference Golfer of the Week, announced Thursday by the conference office.

Matchett began the tournament with a first-round 71 Sunday to find himself in a tie for second place in the individual standings after 18 holes. He slipped to 11th place after shooting 74 in Monday's second round, but another 71 in Tuesday's third and final round brought him back to eighth place, his highest placement ever as a Redhawk. His cumulative score of even-par 216 helped Seattle University finish fourth as a team in the tournament.

Matchett competed in all four tournaments during Seattle U's fall season, starting with a 42nd place finish at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate in Pullman, Wash., with a three-round score of 220 (+4). He improved each round during the Saint Martin's Invitational in Olympia, Wash., finishing in a tie for 20th place with a final score of 214 (-2) after shooting 69 in the final round. At the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational in Nipomo, Calif., Matchett finished in a tie for 20th place with a cumulative score of 223 (+10).

Seattle University became the 12th member of the America Sky Men's Golf Conference over the summer, joining Binghamton University, Chicago State University, University of Hartford, Houston Baptist University, University of North Dakota, University of Northern Colorado, Sacramento State University, University of South Dakota, University of Texas-Pan American, Utah Valley University, and Weber State University. Seattle U will compete in the America Sky Men's Golf Conference Championships at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 2-4, 2011.

The Seattle University men's golf team completed its fall season at the Kauai Collegiate Invitational and will next compete after the beginning of 2011. The women's golf team heads to Arroyo Grande, Calif., for the Lamkin Grip Cal Poly Women's Invitational at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 1-2.
