The Seattle University women's soccer team quickly responded to a Colorado tally by scoring its own goal, and the defense kept the Buffaloes from notching another score as the Redhawks earned a 1-1 tie with the University of Colorado Saturday at Prentup Field.

Colorado (6-9-2) took the lead in the 11th minute of the match when Hayley Hughes blasted a shot from 23 yards out that hit the crossbar and landed over the goal line. The Buffaloes continued the offensive pressure, as Erin Bricker attempted a shot off a corner kick, but the Seattle U defense was able to block the shot.

Heather Thomas (Woodinville, Wash.) came into the match and immediately made an impact, first attempting a shot in the 16th minute that sailed just wide. In the 19th minute, Thomas' corner kick sailed towards Emma Levy (Sammamish, Wash.), whose header beat Colorado goalie Annie Brunner for Levy's team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Both teams had chances in the second half, beginning with back-to-back shots by Amy Barczuk early on, one stopped by Seattle U goalie Madison Goverde (Snohomish, Wash.) and the other sailing wide. After Levy had a shot blocked, Thomas sent another corner kick into the box, but Jordan Salisbury's (Federal Way, Wash.) header attempt went just wide.

The Buffaloes kept the pressure on Goverde, forcing the junior to make four more saves during the second half. Carlee Norquist (Boise, Idaho) created a scoring chance in the 71st minute, but the Colorado defense helped Brunner by keeping the ball from crossing the goal line. The final 18 minutes of the second half were quiet, forcing the two squads to play extra time.

Colorado had the best chances of the first overtime period, as Maggi Steury's shot was stopped by Goverde and Shaye Marshall's header sailed wide. In the second 10-minute overtime session, Thomas gained a shot on goal that was saved by Brunner, while Goverde notched two more saves on shots by Amanda Foulk and Alex Dohm.

"I am proud of the team's effort today, especially after a long day of travel yesterday, playing at altitude, and facing a great Colorado squad," head coach Julie Woodward said. "Emma scored a great goal for us and played well all weekend long."

Seattle U earned the tie despite being outshot, 20-10, with Colorado earning 10 shots on goal to the Redhawks' four shots on goal. Goverde finished the match with nine saves, while Brunner collected two saves during the contest.

Seattle University (9-5-2) heads back on the road next weekend, facing Cal State Bakersfield Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. and Cal State Northridge Sunday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. The Redhawks will conclude the regular season with a Senior Day contest against Cal State Bakersfield Saturday, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m. at Championship Field.
