Seattle University head swimming coach Craig Mallery, the only head coach in the 14-year history of the swimming program, has decided to step down from his head coach responsibilities at SU.

"We respect and support Craig's personal decision and are deeply appreciative of his leadership and guidance of SU's swimming programs and wish him well," Bill Hogan, Director of Athletics, said. "He has long been an extraordinarily valuable member of our athletic staff, and we will remain grateful to Craig for his significant contributions."

Assistant coach Kat Cuevas will assume interim leadership of the Seattle U swim program as a search is conducted for a new head coach.

Mallery has built the Seattle University swim program from scratch, first rising in the ranks of NAIA competition before becoming a top squad in Division II circles. The men's swim team won the 2002 NAIA Championship and finished eighth in the 2008 NCAA Division II Championships, while the women's squad finished second in the NAIA in 2002 and qualified at least one swimmer to the NCAA Division II Championships in the last five years at that level.

Mallery was recognized as the 2010 Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Coach of the Year for men and women, is a two-time NAIA National Coach of the Year and, in 2008, he was honored by the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) by being named a Coach of Excellence, which recognizes coaches that foster holistic achievement.
