Senior Hans Heitzinger (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and freshman Hannah Mittelstaedt (Maple Valley, Wash.) led Seattle University to place in the middle of the pack in both the men’s and women’s races at the Pier Park Classic in Portland, Ore. late Friday afternoon.

Heitzinger ran the men’s 8k race in 26.16.08 to place 16th and lead the Redhawk men to a fourth place finish in the eight-team meet. Joash Osoro from the University of Portland finished first in 24:42.95, fronting a 1-3-5-8-10 winning finish for Portland. Freshman Peter Slauson (Portland, Ore.) finished 31st in 27:06.39, closely followed by junior Chris Auld (Eugene, Ore.) in 27:12.37. Freshman Graham Kinzel-Grubbs (Portland, Ore.) was 37th in 27:27.40, followed by fellow first-year runner Kevin Kopetz (Derry, N.H.) in 39th place with a time of 27:32.74.

Other runners were sophomores Keenan Clinch (Sammamish, Wash.) in 27:55.31 and Ryan Dennison (Pacifica, Calif.) in 27:57.43, junior Dan Auld (Eugene, Ore.) who finished in 28:31.18, and freshman Peter VanNuland (Newcastle, Wash.), rounding it off in 28:43.22.

The team results ended with Portland in first with 26 points, Willamette second with 33, followed by Warner Pacific (102), Seattle U (105), Northwest Christian (139), Clark College (157), Highline CC (207), Clackamas CC (209), and Mt. Hood CC (250).

In the 6k women’s race, Mittelstaedt finished 20th in 19:19.39, followed by juniors Sarah Bolce (Sacramento, Calif.) in 19:40.56 for 27th and Nicole Waters (Phoenix, Ariz.) in 19:46.47 for 30th, and senior Allison Prather (Carpinteria, Calif.) right behind her for 32nd place in 19:48.64. Junior Ashley Dalton (Bellingham, Wash.) placed 50th in 20:43.12.

Seattle U placed fifth on the women’s side with 117 points. Portland also won the women’s with just 20 points, lead by Kellie Houser’s 17:51.37 first place finish. Willamette placed second again with 64 points, Northwest Christian third with 77, Clark College fourth with 111, and Seattle U was followed by Mt. Hood CC (186), Clackamas CC (190), and Highline CC (211).

The Redhawks will next compete in the Sundodger Invitational held in West Seattle on Sept. 18th before hosting the Emerald City Open on Oct. 2nd.
