On the men's side, Zach Stanfield (Adna, Wash.) qualified for the finals in both the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash. He finished fourth overall in the 100 meter dash preliminaries with a time of 10.98 seconds, followed by a victory in his heat in the 200 meter dash preliminaries in 21.97 seconds.
Tom Mezzera (San Francisco, Calif.) won his heat in the preliminaries of the 400 meter dash, posting a time of 48.28 seconds, while Dan Auld (Eugene, Ore.) was able to qualify for the finals in the 800 meter run after finishing seventh in the preliminaries in 1:55.06. Daniel Sullivan (Tukwila, Wash.) was the top qualifier in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 53.77 seconds, and Jude Martinez (Hagatna, Guam) also qualified for the event finals with a time of 57.29 seconds.
Michael Van Nuland (Newcastle, Wash.) picked up three points for the Seattle U men, finishing sixth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:58.10. Currently the men sit in eighth place in the team standings with seven points, but they will have many opportunities to pick up points during Saturday's competition.
The women earned their points Friday in the field events, led by Lindsay Currier (Beaverton, Ore.), who finished in third place in the discus throw with a best effort of 40.81 meters (133' 11"). Brittany Philio (Renton, Wash.) tied her season high in the high jump, clearing 1.60 meters (5' 3") to finish in fourth place, while Mara Becker (Fairbanks, Alaska) finished in a tie for sixth place after clearing 1.50 meters (4' 11").
On the final day of the heptathlon, Kaytie Bateman (Chehalis, Wash.) completed a school-record performance with 3,538 points, good enough for seventh place and two points for the Redhawk women. She finished sixth among the heptathletes in the long jump with a top effort of 4.62 meters (15' 2"), fifth in the javelin throw with a best toss of 28.06 meters (92' 1"), and fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:44.05.
Although she did not qualify for the finals, Elena Collins (Eugene, Ore.) set a school record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 58.52 seconds. The Redhawk women six in sixth place in the team standings with 18 points, just one point behind Houston Baptist and Texas Pan American in fourth place.
The Great West Conference Championships conclude Saturday, with the field events starting at 10 a.m. local time and the running events beginning at 12:20 p.m. CDT with the 4x100 meter relays.
