The Seattle University baseball team could not overcome a solid pitching performance by Washington starter Ben Guidos as the Huskies picked up a 5-2 victory Wednesday night at Husky Ballpark.

Seattle University took the lead in the top of the first as Doug Buser (Orinda, Calif.) led off with a walk, and Bryndon Ecklund (Elma, Wash.) followed with a single to left field. After a Cullen Hendrickson (Auburn, Wash.) flyout advanced Buser to third, Nate Roberts (Silverdale, Wash.) drove the senior in with a single to left field.

Washington (25-19) responded in the bottom of the second inning, with Pierce Rankin and Chase Anselment leading off the frame with back-to-back singles. The two Huskies were successful on a double steal, and an overthrow by Redhawk catch Josh Kutz (Seattle, Wash.) allowed Rankin to score. Troy Scott followed with a double that scored Anselment, and David Bentrott drove in Scott with a single to left field.

The Huskies threatened to extend the lead in the bottom of the third inning, drawing three walks to load the bases. Arlo Evasick (Port Ludlow, Wash.) came on in relief of Redhawk starter Brandon Kizer (Marysville, Wash.), struck out Caleb Brown, and induced a groundout by Scott to end the inning without any damage. Evasick kept the Redhawks in the game with 3 2/3 innings of work, allowing only two hits while striking out two batters.

Seattle U cut into the lead in the top of the fifth when Buser laced a two-out double to right-center field and scored on a single up the middle by Ecklund. The Huskies extended their lead back to two when Rankin launched his eighth home run of the season over the left field fence. Washington further increased the advantage in the seventh after Anselment's two-out single scored pinch hitter Bradley Boyer to put the home team ahead, 5-2.

Guidos pitched seven innings, scattering six hits and one walk while striking out four Redhawk batters. Forrest Snow and Andrew Kittredge each pitched an inning of relief, with Kittredge picking up his third save of the season. Kizer took the loss, allowing four hits, three walks, and three runs in 2 1/3 innings of work with three strikeouts.

Ecklund led all players at the plate, going 3-for-4, while Roberts earned two hits in four at bats for Seattle U. Rankin went 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored for the Huskies, and Anselment hit 2-for-3 during the night.

Seattle University (7-31) returns to Bannerwood Park for a short four-game homestand, beginning this weekend with games against Lewis-Clark State Friday, May 7, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, May 8, at 1 p.m. Live stats and live audio will be available on GoSeattleU.com.
