The Seattle University baseball team responded to the first wave of offense from the University of the Pacific, but the Tigers kept putting on the pressure, pulling away for a 19-9 victory Sunday afternoon in the final game of the weekend series at Klein Family Field.

Pacific (7-4) jumped on the board in the first inning as Nick Longmire walked and Brett Christopher was hit by a pitch. On a double steal attempt, the throw got away, allowing Longmire to score. A Brian Martin double scored Christopher, and Martin came around to score on a triple by Matt Walker. Walker would score on a single by J.B. Brown, and Brown came around to score on a single by Joe Oliveira.

SeattleU responded in the top of the second, led off by a single by Josh Kalalau (University Place, Wash.). A double by Sean Narby (Auburn, Wash.) and a walk to Steve Kirbach (Kirkland, Wash.) loaded the bases, and Skip Spencer (Springfield, Ore.) followed with a double down the right field line that scored Kalalau and Narby. Cullen Hendrickson (Auburn, Wash.) continued his hot hitting, singling through the right side to score Kirbach and Spencer.

After a single run in the bottom of the second inning, the Tigers began to pull away in the third, as Longmire hit a two-run double to left field and later scored on a Redhawk throwing error. In the fourth inning, Matt Fuson was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on a double by John Haberman. After Pacific loaded the bases, Longmire drove in two more runs on a single, and Ben Gorang was able to score on a failed pickoff attempt on Longmire.

Pacific continued to succeed offensively in the fifth inning, as Walker led off with a single through the left side. After two out, a double by Haberman scored Walker, and Walker came around to score when Oliveira singled to center field. SeattleU got one run back in the top of the sixth as Kalalau reached on an error, advanced to third on a double by Nick Latta (Tacoma, Wash.), and scored on a groundout by Narby.

The Tigers continued to put crooked numbers on the scoreboard, as Longmire led off the sixth inning with a double to right field and scored on a single by Martin. After Walker singled through the right side, back-to-back doubles by Dustin Torchio and Fuson brought in three runs and increased the Tigers' lead to 19-5. In the top of the seventh, Josh Kutz (Seattle, Wash.) doubled, advanced to third on a double by Hendrickson, and scored on a groundout by Doug Buser (Orinda, Calif.).

After two groundouts in the top of the eighth inning, SeattleU scored three runs without the benefit of a hit. Off relief pitcher Jamie Niley, Narby walked, pinch hitter Bryndon Ecklund (Montesano, Wash.) was hit by a pitch, and then Kutz and Phil Parrish (Escalon, Calif.) drew back-to-back walks to score Narby. Hendrickson was hit by a pitch to score Ecklund, and Buser picked up a walk to force in Kutz.

The SeattleU pitchers struggled throughout the game, as no hurler lasted more than 1 2/3 innings on the mound. Brian Shannon (Olympia, Wash.) took the loss after giving up five hits and five runs in just 2/3 of an inning. Blaine Jones (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) allowed just a walk in 1 2/3 innings of work, while Eric Yardley (Richland, Wash.) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Redhawks.

For Pacific, Jake Hummer earned the victory with six innings of work, allowing five hits, two walks, and five runs, four of them earned, while striking out three Redhawks. The Tigers finished with 21 hits during the game as seven different players enjoyed multiple-hit performances. Hendrickson led SeattleU with a 2-for-4 effort with three runs batted in.

Seattle University (2-8) heads to Eugene, Ore., next weekend for a four-game series against the Oregon Ducks March 12-14, beginning with a single game next Friday at 5 p.m. at PK Park. The Redhawks return home for a four-game series against Cal State Northridge at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue March 19-21.
