The Loyola Marymount Lions showed vast improvement over the calendar year, avenging a 49-39 loss to Seattle University on Jan. 1, 2009, at KeyArena with a 104-89 victory in men's basketball action Wednesday night at Gersten Pavilion.

Mike Boxley (Mountlake Terrace, Wash.) led the way with a career-high 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, including three baskets from behind the three-point line. Charles Garcia (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while Cervante Burrell (Sacramento, Calif.) earned 12 points, four assists, and two steals and Chris Gweth (Beaverton, Ore.) contributed 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists.

Loyola Marymount (8-7) had six players score in double figures, led by Vernon Teel with 24 points, eight rebounds, 10 assists, and four steals. Jarred DuBois earned 21 points, while Drew Viney finished with 19 points and seven rebounds and Kevin Young contributed 15 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots, and two steals. LaRon Armstead was perfect in his shooting, finishing with 11 points, and Ashley Hamilton added 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists to the winning effort.

A three-pointer by Garrett Lever (Phoenix, Ariz.) gave Seattle University a 31-26 lead with 7:24 remaining in the first half, but Loyola Marymount responded with a 17-2 run over the next five and a half minutes to pull ahead, 43-33. The Redhawks answered with a 12-3 run to end the first half and begin the second half to cut their deficit to one at 46-45 two minutes into the second half.

Peter Harris (Seattle, Wash.) hit his second three-pointer of the game to give SeattleU a short-lived 54-52 lead, but Viney responded with his own long distance shot 20 seconds later, starting a 14-2 run to give the Lions a 66-56 advantage with 12:05 remaining in the game. Loyola Marymount scored its final 17 points on free throws, hitting 80 percent (36-of-45) of its attempts from the charity stripe in the game.

For the game, the Lions shot 59.3 percent (32-of-54) from the field, including 16-of-24 field goal attempts in the second half, and won the rebounding battle, 43-31. Seattle University shot 41.6 percent from the field, including 10-of-24 from behind the three-point line, and 15-of-19 from the free throw line.

Loyola Marymount reached the 100-point mark for the first time since Jan. 29, 1998, as it picked up its eighth win of the season after collecting three victories overall during the 2008-09 campaign. Seattle University had not given up over 100 points in regulation since a 107-81 loss at Humboldt State in the final game of the 2005-06 season.

Seattle University (6-8) heads home to prepare for Saturday's game against Harvard University, off to its best start in 25 years, beginning at 2 p.m. at KeyArena at Seattle Center. Dave Grosby and Gary Hill will broadcast the game live on 710 ESPN Seattle, while FSN Northwest will show the game on tape delay Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.
