Last Monday in Bozeman, Mont., Mellies dished out a season-high 49 assists and tied her season high with 17 defensive digs as Seattle University came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Montana State in five sets. Mellies was part of a key block during the fourth set that helped SeattleU extend the match to the limit, finishing with three block assists in the contest.
Sunday afternoon, Mellies faced a high-powered Cal State Bakersfield attack, finishing with 25 assists and 12 defensive digs. She kept the Redhawks in contention during the second set with 10 assists and seven digs.
For the season, Mellies has accumulated 172 defensive digs, third on the team, and 49 total blocks, fourth on the squad. She is currently fifth on SeattleU's all-time blocks list with 188 and tenth on the career digs list with 675 defensive digs. Mellies is also second in school history in assists with 2,760 and is one of three players to earn over 1,000 assists in a season, collecting 1,023 assists in 2008.
This is the third honor this season for Mellies, who was named to the All-Tournament teams at the Pepperdine Asics Classic and the Mission Inn of Pismo Beach Invitational. This is also the third time that a SeattleU player has earned a Division I independent weekly award, with Cristin Richards being named Player of the Week on Oct. 5 and Emily Deleissegues picking up the same Defensive Player of the Week honor on Oct. 19.
Seattle University (6-19) will look to rebound from last night's loss against Cal State Bakersfield squad tonight, Nov. 2, beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a match at UC Irvine Tuesday, Nov. 3, starting at 7 p.m. The Redhawks wrap up the 2009 season Tuesday, Nov. 10, by hosting Saint Martin's at the Connolly Center beginning at 7 p.m.
