The Seattle University men's soccer team controlled the possession and created more scoring opportunities, but a late San Jose State goal allowed the visiting Spartans to come away with a 1-0 victory in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action Sunday afternoon at Championship Field.

San Jose State (9-6-1, 4-0 MPSF) did not take a shot in the second half until there was less than seven minutes remaining in regulation, as Colby Moore ran a successful give-and-go with Oscar Yniguez, whose shot found the lower right corner of the net for his fourth tally of the season. Yniguez was credited with both Spartan shots in the second half, as his header in the final minute was stopped by SeattleU goalie Ivan Dizdar (Phoenix, Ariz.)

Ed Walugembe (Renton, Wash.) paced the Seattle University offense with eight total shots, including a blast in the 79th minute that Spartan goalie Jonathan Lester turned aside. Walugembe created another solid chance in the 81st minute, taking a shot that was blocked, but the ball landed right at the feet of Elliot Richards (Seattle, Wash.), whose shot attempt sailed high.

The Redhawks came out of the gate aggressively, taking control of the match and earning scoring chances for Walugembe and Brandon Hamer (Carmichael, Calif.) in the fifth minute. Midway through the half, a scramble in front of the net seemingly led to a SeattleU goal, but a foul was called on the home team to negate the score. SeattleU's last first-half chance came in the 40th minute, as a corner kick by Sean Morris (Bothell, Wash.) found John Pegg (Edmonton, Alberta), but Pegg's header sailed just wide.

SeattleU outshot San Jose State, 17-8, including a 9-2 advantage after halftime. Lester finished with five saves in earning the shutout, while Dizdar was credited with four saves for the Redhawks. Besides Yniguez, Nick Cukar also took two shots on goal for the Spartans, while Richards contributed three shots for Seattle University.

Seattle University (2-10-1, 1-3 MPSF), currently tied for fifth with Cal State Bakersfield in the conference standings, heads to Colorado to face Denver University, tied for seventh with a 0-3-1 league record, Friday, Oct. 30, starting at 7:30 p.m. local time. The Redhawks then return home to face fourth-place Air Force, who moved to 2-2 in the conference with back-to-back victories this weekend, next Sunday, Nov. 1, beginning at 1 p.m. at Championship Field.
