"Today we had a good game and it was nice to see us explode offensively," said head coach Julie Woodward. "Scoring five goals in the last two games helps us build our confidence and helps us to continue to play well."
Senior Jamie Coe kicked off the Redhawk scoring at the 5:27 minute mark. Coe landed her foot on the ball and shot it to the back of the net amidst a scramble in the box. It was the SU forwards second goal of the season and 17th of her career. The Duvall, Wash. native is two goals away from breaking into the top-10 goal scorers in Redhawk women's soccer history.
Less than 15 minutes later, Coe served up her fourth assist on the year to fellow senior Jamie Peterson. The Bellevue, Wash. native received a cross from Coe and volleyed it into the far post. It was her first goal on the road of the season.
"Jamie (Coe) had a great game for us," continued Woodward. "She had a goal and an assist in the game, and helped us kick off a strong offensive game."
Junior Kara Kuttler continued her dominating offensive streak by scoring her eighth goal of the season. The forward from Redmond, Wash. scored the Redhawks' third goal in the first half at the 22:22 minute mark. Central defender Nance Hill passed off her first career assist to Kuttler to close out the Redhawk scoring spurt.
After a SeattleU dominated first half, Bakersfield prevented the Redhawks from earning their fifth shutout of the season. The Roadrunner's Kassi Massey knocked in a pass from Denise Hernandez to bring CSUB within two goals.
Despite giving up the late second half goal, SU's defense was never forced onto their heels and preserved their two goal lead. Defenders Kate Edstrom, who had two shots on goal, Hill, Jordan Salisbury and Brynn Watanabe worked throughout the game to not let the Roadrunners get back on the board.
On the other end of the field, the SU offense was ignited. They fired off 14 shots, including six on goal, to CSUB's seven total shots. Kuttler and Kassandra Riozzi each had three shots in the game, and Riozzi assisted on Coe's goal in the sixth minute.
"As the ball has been going into the back of the net it is helping build our confidence," concluded Woodward. "We head to UC Santa Barbara to play a strong Gaucho team, but are up to the challenge."
SU will square off with UCSB on Sunday, Oct. 18, in a contest slated for noon in Santa Barbara, Calif.
