Despite dominating the game on all ends of the field, the Seattle University women's soccer team were unable to earn their fifth straight win at home in 2009. The Redhawks were edged 1-0 by the Dons of the University of San Francisco Sunday afternoon at Championship Field. SU now falls to 5-6-1 on the season, while USF improves to 5-1-5.

With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game the Redhawk defense misread the USF attack. The Seattle backline's brief misread opened up the goal to an oncoming Alyson Drake, who chipped the ball into the goal over SU's goalkeeper Madison Goverde.

"We executed well and were overall the better team out there today," said head coach Julie Woodward. "But soccer is about playing the full 90 minutes and we didn't. We made a mistake that ended up costing us the game."

Seattle was the stronger team on the field and led the game statistically. SU outshot USF 14-6, with five shots on goal to the Don's two. The Redhawks were led by leading playmaker junior Kara Kuttler, who had five shots in the game and one on goal. Kuttler sailed off several close balls, but could never get it into the back of the net.

Freshman Carlee Norquist, who started in the midfield for the first time this season, had a solid offensive day. The Boise, Idaho native, who had started at outside left back in the Redhawks first 11 contests, tallied three shots on the day, including a header that USF's 'keeper managed to save just before it crossed the goal line.

Making their first career start at outside back was sophomore Renee Vandermause. She made a strong starting debut and moved the ball out of the SU half consistently. Vandermause gelled in well with the veteran SeattleU backline of Kate Edstrom, Nance Hill and Jordan Salisbury.

The Redhawks look to bounce back into the win column at the Aztec Classic hosted by San Diego State University. On Friday, Oct. 2, SU will square off with UNLV at 1:30 p.m. and close out the weekend with tournament host SDSU on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. Both contests will be played at the SDSU Sports Deck in San Diego, Calif.
