The Seattle University men's soccer team established more of an offensive attack against 12th-ranked Indiana, but the Hoosiers took advantage of a couple of set situations in the second half to pull out a 2-0 victory Sunday at the Hilton Garden Inn Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament hosted by Notre Dame at Alumni Stadium.
Nine minutes into the second half, Indiana converted on a corner kick, as Andy Adlard sent the ball into the box, from where Will Bruin headed it into the net to put the Hoosiers on the scoreboard. Bruin returned the favor with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation, as he joined with Eric Alexander to set up Adlard for Indiana's second goal of the match.
After the Hoosiers' second goal, SeattleU did not give up, continuing the offensive pressure as time wound down. After a John Pegg (Edmonton, Alberta) shot off a corner kick sailed high, Wesley VanHooser's (Lake Stevens, Wash.) scoring chance was blocked by the Indiana defense. Demaci Roussos (Sacramento, Calif.) sent a shot on goal, but Hoosier goalie Luis Soffner made the last of his five saves, and the flurry ended when Ed Walugembe's (Renton, Wash.) chance went wide of the net.
Indiana (2-1-1) got off two shots in the first ten minutes of the match before Seattle University established a counterattack, as Pegg's attempt in the 14th minute was stopped by Soffner. Adlard was credited with three shots within three minutes, followed by an attempt from Alexander that SeattleU goalie Emerson DeOliveira (Normandy Park, Wash.) kept out of the net.
In the 27th minute, Alex McCrackin (Rio Linda, Calif.) took a shot that Soffner stopped. Seattle University earned another good scoring chance with a corner kick in the 40th minute, but the shot by Kyle Peterman (Boise, Idaho) sailed high, and the two teams went into the intermission locked in a scoreless tie.
Pegg and Peterman each were credited with two shots, including one shot on goal apiece. Adlard led all players with seven total shots, while two of Bruin's five shots were on goal. DeOliveira finished with four saves in the match.
With the victory coupled with New Mexico's 2-1 overtime win over Notre Dame, Indiana was declared the winner of the weekend tournament. Roussos and midfielder Sean Morris (Bothell, Wash.) were named to the All-Tournament Team for their play during the invitational.
Seattle University (0-4-1) plays its first home match in 18 days on Saturday, Sept. 19, hosting Pac-10 member Oregon State at Championship Field for a contest that begins at 12:30 p.m.
