head men’s basketball coach Cameron Dollar has announced that Garrett Lever, the son of former NBA player Fat Lever, has agreed to transfer to and plans to join the men’s basketball program beginning in the 2009-10 academic year.
Lever, originally from , , played this past season at in , where he led the team to the regional championship and to the national junior college championship game. He was fifth in the nation with 2.3 steals per game to go along with seven points and four assists per contest.
The 6’1”, 180-lb. guard started his collegiate career at Division II school Nebraska-Kearney, where he was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Leading the country with 3.6 steals per game, he set the school single-season record for steals with 90 and also averaged 13.0 points per game as he helped Nebraska-Kearney reach the semifinals of the conference tournament, earning all-tournament honors along the way.
As a senior at in , Lever averaged 16.3 points per game in leading his team to a 24-2 record and a top-15 ranking in the country. He earned first team All-City and All-Region honors as well as Second Team All-State. His team reached the semifinals of the state tournament in consecutive seasons.
“Garrett is a tremendous defender who does whatever it takes to win. It is no accident that every team he is on contends for championships. We are thrilled he chose to join us here at ,” Dollar said.
Lever’s father Lafayette “Fat” Lever was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers in the first round of the 1982 NBA Draft, but made his mark with the Denver Nuggets, consistently placing in the top ten for steals in the league.
Lever joins a program coming off a 21-8 season which included 13 victories over Division I opponents. will play a full Division I schedule as it enters Year Two of the reclassification process in 2009-10.
