Having suffered two one-run losses to former Division II rival Cal State Bakersfield in February, the Seattle University softball team turned the tables on its fellow reclassifying Division I school, picking up single runs in the final two innings to defeat the Roadrunners, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the Division I Independent Softball Tournament at Butler-Hancock Field.
Pinch hitting for Peggy Mathison (, ) to leadoff the seventh inning, Lisa Hill () reached on a Cal State Bakersfield error. Mathison reentered the game to run the bases, and she went station-to-station as Katie Antich (, ) and Katie Petersen () each singled to load the bases. Jamie Foote () ended the game with a single to left field that scored Mathison.
SeattleU was down 1-0 with one out in the sixth inning when Foote singled. After another out, Hannah Klein (, ) singled, and Jessica Amador () followed with her own single that scored Foote to tie the game, 1-1. Kelsey Reynolds () kept the Redhawks in the game and was rewarded with the win, scattering six hits and a walk while picking up one strikeout for her eighth victory of the year.
Cal State Bakersfield (27-23) took the lead in the top of the fourth inning as Danielle Lyman doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Chelsey Bell. advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Kristen Archuleta. Lyman and Archuleta combined to go 5-for-6 in the game, but the rest of the team was only 1-for-22.
(16-20) heads to the semifinals of the tournament later tonight at 7:30 p.m. local time against Houston Baptist, which earned a bye by winning Pool B Friday.
