Men?s Tennis Splits Saturday Matches with Whitworth and Gonzaga

Seattle University started off hot in their 5-2 victory over Whitworth, but they weren’t able to keep the momentum going against Gonzaga, falling to the bulldogs for the second consecutive day, 5-1.

In the morning match, the Redhawks battled back after dropping two-of-three doubles matches to win all four singles matches. Adam Strizich (Helena, Mont.) and Patrick Boorkman (Bellevue, Wash.) were victorious in their number three doubles match against Colin Barrett and Kellen Oetgen, 8-5. In the one position, Michael Shelton and Joe Wales defeated Mark Shkretbtan (Redmond, Wash.) and Matt Enkema (Bellevue, Wash.), 8-3, while Colin Zalewski and Henry Williams downed Alex Montgomery (Seattle, Wash.) and Dylan Reetz (Rockwell, Texas) in the two position, 8-6.

The comeback started with Shkretbtan winning his number one singles match against Shelton in three-sets (6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 6-3). Montgomery contributed to the win with a straight-set victory over Wales in the second position (6-2, 6-2), while Boorkman was also victorious in straight-sets over Zalewski in the three spot (7-5, 6-4). The win was clinched by Reetz in the fourth position, winning in three sets over Williams (6-4, 5-7, 6-3).

SU tried to avenge their loss yesterday to Gonzaga in the afternoon, but Strizich was the only player to come up victorious, winning the number five singles over Mike Merz (6-3, 6-4). Montgomery trailed Stefan Feddersen in the number one slot before retiring in the second set due to injury (6-0, 3-0 (retired)). Roman Dojcak defeated Shkretbtan in the second set tiebreak to win the number two spot (6-4, 7-6 (7-5)).

In the number three singles, Reetz fell to Jake Davis in three-sets (6-4, 7-6, (7-2)), while Boorkman fell to Scott Sullivan in the fourth spot in straight-sets (6-2, 6-1). William Tsang (Bellevue, Wash.) fell to Zach Peach in straight-sets during the number six match (6-1, 6-1).

Seattle University (4-8) will return to action next Saturday when they take on Idaho and Lewis-Clark State in Moscow, Idaho starting at 9 a.m.
