After posting a come-from-behind victory in the first game, the offense of the Seattle University softball team came alive in the second game, scoring multiple runs in four of the six innings to complete a historic sweep, defeating New Mexico, 3-2 and 14-8, for the first home wins as a Division I school against a Division I opponent Thursday afternoon at Logan Field.
In the first game, (9-16) scored two unearned runs in the first inning, but responded immediately, as a sacrifice fly by Lisa Hill (, ) drove in Katie Petersen () in the bottom of the first to put SeattleU on the board. In the bottom of the third, with the bases loaded, Jessica Amador (, ) singled to left field, driving in Jodie Schmehr () with the tying run.
In the fourth inning, Cassie Cueto (, ) singled, followed by a double by Petersen. Schmehr would single to right field to score Cueto and give SeattleU the lead for good. Cueto finished the first game 2-for-2 with a walk, while Amador also had two hits for the Redhawks.
Kelsey Reynolds () earned her second victory of the season with a complete game, giving up only four hits and a walk while striking out four Lobo batters. Analise Rubalcava took the loss for , giving up seven hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings of work. Danielle Castro shut down in 2 2/3 innings of work, giving up only two hits.
The Lobos scored first in game two, but SeattleU figured Castro out and quickly jumped ahead, as Jamie Foote () drove in Petersen with a single and scored on a double by Hill. Amador hit her first home run of the season to give a 4-1 lead.
responded, loading the bases off SeattleU starter Hannah Klein () with two outs in the top of the second. Rubalcava drew a walk to drive in Erin Brandow, after which Reynolds was brought in to replace Klein. Katie Gilmore promptly doubled to center field to drive in two runs, and Shaunte Duarte followed with a single that plated two more Lobos and gave the visitors a 6-4 lead.
answered, as Peggy Mathison () and Schmehr singled before Foote drove them in with a triple to center field to tie the game at 6-6. In the fourth inning, retook the lead as Samantha Hughes doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gilmore. The Redhawks would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth as Schmehr singled to drive in Katie Antich (), followed by a bases-loaded single by Lauren Berin (Lacey, Wash.) that scored Schmehr and Foote. Cueto added to the SeattleU lead with a single that drove in Hill.
The Lobos scored an unearned run in the fifth inning, but Klein returned to the pitching circle and induced a double play to end the rally. In the bottom of the sixth, Hill led off with her fifth home run of the season, and after two walks, Cueto singled to drive in Berin. Pinch hitter Kate Zender () singled to score Amador, and Cueto would score the final run of the game on a wild pitch by Lobo reliever Kerry Hodgins.
Reynolds was credited with her second victory of the day, giving up five hits and three runs, only one of them earned, in 2 1/3 innings of work. By re-entering the game with SeattleU up by only two runs, Klein picked up the save, pitching 4 2/3 innings and giving up five hits and two walks. Castro took the loss, giving up 13 hits and 10 runs, all earned, in 4 2/3 innings of work.
In the second game, Foote went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, three runs batted in, and a home run away from hitting for the cycle. Cueto also went 3-for-4 in the nightcap with a run scored and two runs batted in, while Schmehr and Hill each had two hits during the second game of the doubleheader.
Because SeattleU head coach Dan Powers had a pressing matter to take care of, assistant coach Sean Praven stepped in during the first game and helped the team take the 3-2 lead, earning him the unofficial victory, with Powers notching the unofficial save after arriving back at the field in the fifth inning.
(8-9) heads south for a Spring Break trip to the Pac-10 Oregon schools, facing and in back-to-back doubleheaders next Tuesday and Wednesday, March 24 and 25. After weekend trips to (March 28) and Simon Fraser (April 4), the Redhawks return home to face in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Logan Field.
