For the second straight match, senior Chris Hodges (, ) scored late in the second half as the men’s soccer team defeated Simon Fraser, 2-1, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Championship Field.
On a corner kick with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation, Sean Morris () sent the ball into the box, and the Simon Fraser defense was unable to fully clear it out. Andrew Kreiter () ran in and attempted a shot, but Clan goalie Thomas Lindley made the save. While the ball was still in the air, Hodges dove in and headed the ball just over the goal line for his second straight game-winning tally.
Simon Fraser (10-5-0) tied the match just two minutes earlier, as Justin Carvery advanced the ball on an attack and passed it to David Hill on the left side. Hill’s cross found the head of Lucas Barrett, whose header beat Redhawk goalie Jordan Jennings () for his eighth goal of the season.
After a scoreless first half, jumped on the board early in the second half when Hodges sent a long pass into the box. Freshman Kyle Peterman () beat a Clan defender to the ball and chipped a shot just inside the right post for his fifth goal of the season four and a half minutes into the second half.
picked up three saves in earning his fourth victory of the season, while Lindley turned away six shots to keep Simon Fraser in the match. Most of the stats were even, with earning a slight advantage in shots (14-13) and Simon Fraser picking up one more corner kick opportunity (7-6) and two fewer fouls (13-15).
Before the match, Hodges, , Kreiter, Luis Gamez (, ), Lamar Kumangai-McGee (, ), Mutanda Kwesele (, ), and Sean Rawson (, ) were honored in Senior Day ceremonies for their contributions to the men’s soccer program.
(9-3-1) concludes the regular season with road games in , beginning Friday, Nov. 7, at Cal State Bakersfield at 7 p.m. The Redhawks finish the 2008 season with a contest at Fresno Pacific Monday, Nov. 10, starting at 1 p.m.
