Freshmen Kaytlyn Dill (, ) and Cristin Richards (, ) combined for 31 kills, and sophomore Shelly Anderson () had one of the best defensive nights in school history as the Seattle University volleyball team extended its winning streak to three with a 3-1 victory (25-19, 24-26, 25-20, 25-20) over the University of North Dakota in the fourth match of the Dig For The Cure Classic Saturday at the Connolly Center.
Dill led all players with 16 kills, plus she earned 14 digs in the match, while Richards finished the night with 15 kills, a team-high three service aces, six digs, and two total blocks. Meanwhile, posted the fifth-highest dig total in a match in school history with 34 digs, plus she also collected two service aces against the Fighting Sioux.
Jamie Mellies () enjoyed another solid night at the setter position, notching 43 assists, 13 digs, two service aces, and three total blocks. Raissa Licano-Sanchez (, ) earned seven kills, while Janet Beckerman (, ) had six kills and six total blocks and Libby Graff () added six kills and six digs to the winning effort.
After the two teams split the first two sets, playing through 20 ties and nine lead changes before the intermission, Seattle University took the early lead in the third and fourth sets and held on to close out the match. The Redhawks took advantage of the fact that North Dakota had played two previous matches, including a tough five-set contest right before the match against Seattle.
(19-4) never gave up, as Devin Trefz led the way with 11 kills and seven digs and Britta Hanson earned nine kills and four total blocks, including two solo blocks. Libero Lindsay Vortherms kept the Fighting Sioux in the match with 26 defensive digs, while Annika Smed collected six kills and 15 digs. finishes the tournament with a 1-2 record.
In the previous match, (16-2) held on to defeat rival , 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 20-25, 15-12). Kathleen Hruska led all players with 27 kills and six total blocks for the Coyotes, with Kristin Kritenbrink earning 18 kills and 12 digs and Amber Kobus controlling the back with 24 digs. Trefz and Hanson led the Fighting Sioux with 16 kills each, while Vortherms finished with 21 digs and Smed contributed 14 kills and five digs.
The Dig For The Cure Classic concludes Sunday, Oct. 12, with two matches. At 10 a.m., faces the of , followed by the tournament finale between and at 1:30 p.m.
