Running in her hometown, senior Katie Hansen (Portland, Ore.) won the women’s race by 23 seconds as the Seattle University cross country teams competed in the Pier Park Preview hosted by the University of Portland Friday evening.

Hansen finished the 6,000-meter course in 22:19.64, over 20 seconds ahead of Lyndy Davis of Portland. The Pilots took seven of the top ten spots to easily win the team competition with 23 points. Second through fifth place was separated by only nine points, with Western Oregon finishing second with 111 points, followed by San Francisco State (114 points), Spokane Community College (115 points), and Seattle University (120 points).

Greta Stickney (Poulsbo, Wash.) finished in 28th place with a time of 24:43.35, followed by Jen Hamann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in 36th place in 24:54.53. Junior Rachel Yorkston (Bellingham, Wash.) crossed the finish line in 40th place with a time of 24:59.16, with Tiffany Hunter (Longview, Wash.) finishing in 48th place in 25:05.90, Natalie Martinez (San Francisco, Calif.) placing 58th with a time of 25:32.21, and freshman Sarah Bolce (Sacramento, Calif.) breaking into the team top seven with a 65th place finish in 25:46.77. Julia Miller (Normandy Park, Wash.) finished in 73rd place in 26:27.43, and Ashley Dalton (Bellingham, Wash.) rounded out the Seattle University contingent with a 93rd place finish in 28:51.58.

On the men’s side, Hans Heitzinger (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was the Redhawks’ top finisher, crossing the finish line in 27th place with a time of 26:59.39 over the 8,000-meter course. Michael Van Nuland (Newcastle, Wash.) finished in 32nd place in 27:09.64, followed closely by Erik Barkhaus (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) in 37th place with a time of 27:21.53. Nick Cannata-Bowman (San Francisco, Calif.) was the next Redhawk runner to finish, earning 51st place with a time of 27:40.69, while Adam Kollgaard (Kent, Wash.) was right behind him in 53rd place in 27:42.23.

Graham Miller (Spokane, Wash.) finished in 71st place with a time of 28:20.41, and Matthew McClement (Bellingham, Wash.) rounded out the Redhawk top seven with a 74th place finish in 28:24.35. Chris Auld (Eugene, Ore.) crossed the finish line in 30:04.03, while his brother Dan Auld (Eugene, Ore.) finished the course in 30:16.30 and Rustin Winger (Tracyton, Wash.) completed the race in 31:04.81. As a team, Seattle University finished fifth with 172 points, with Portland earning the victory with 45 points, 15 points fewer than Santa Clara.

Seattle University will next compete in the Sundodger Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington at Lincoln Park in West Seattle Saturday, Sept. 20, beginning at 9 a.m.
