The veterans led the way for the Seattle University women’s cross country team, while the young runners populated the top of the men’s standings as the Redhawk squads dominated Everett Community College in the Greenlake Time Trial to open the 2008 season.

Senior Katie Hansen (Portland, Ore.) controlled the women’s race, finishing the loop in 17:12, a minute and a half faster than her nearest competitor over the three-mile course. Rhiannon Cadelinia (San Francisco, Calif.) finished second with a time of 18:42, followed closely by Greta Stickney (Poulsbo, Wash.) in 18:48 and Rachel Yorkston (Bellingham, Wash.) in 18:56.

The next four Seattle University runners finished within four seconds of each other, led by Natalie Martinez (San Francisco, Calif.) in 19:14, with Celeste Cassidy (Bellingham, Wash.) and Jen Hamann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) right behind her at the 19:16 mark and Tiffany Hunter (Longview, Wash.) crossing the finish line with a time of 19:18. Freshman Sarah Bolce (Sacramento, Calif.) also earned a top ten finish by posting a time of 19:39.

On the men’s side, freshman Erik Barkhaus (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) finished just ahead of sophomore Michael Van Nuland (Newcastle, Wash.) over the 4.3-mile course, with Barkhaus posting a time of 22:51 and Van Nuland crossing the finish line in 22:56. The next five Seattle University finishers were close to each other, led by Hans Heitzinger (Scottsdale, Ariz.) with a time of 23:09.

Adam Kollgaard (Kent, Wash.) finished fourth in 23:15, with freshman Matthew McClement (Bellingham, Wash.) posting a solid time of 23:26 in his first collegiate race. Two sophomores followed, as Graham Miller (Spokane, Wash.) finished sixth in 23:30, with Nick Cannata-Bowman (San Francisco, Calif.) seventh with a time of 23:43.

In the team competition for each gender, Seattle University defeated Everett Community College, 15-50. Spencer Boyes was the top male finisher for Everett, finishing eighth in 23:43, while Taneal Detsen finished tenth in the women’s race with a time of 19:41.

The top runners for each Seattle University team will head to Portland, Ore., for the Pier Park Invitational hosted by the University of Portland on Friday, Sept. 12, beginning at 4 p.m.
