After scoring 20 points in each of ’s final two games of the 2007-08 season against #7 Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Fairbanks, junior Chelsie Morrison () has been named GNAC Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week, announced Monday morning by the conference office.
Thursday night against the nationally-ranked Seawolves, Morrison shot 7-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-6 from the three-point line, and also earned five rebounds and three assists to go along with her 20 points. With Alaska Anchorage up by four late in the first half, Morrison hit a key three-pointer with 48 seconds left to help come back and go on top 40-38 at halftime.
In Saturday’s season finale against Alaska Fairbanks, Morrison scored 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, including 4-of-5 from the three-point line, and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Also earning six rebounds and four steals, she hit a three-pointer with 53 seconds left to bring SeattleU within three, and then hit two free throws with 13 seconds left to cut the Nanooks’ lead to one point.
This is the second time this season that Morrison has earned the weekly honor, previously winning the award on Feb. 19 after scoring 35 points in SeattleU’s 83-78 overtime victory at Montana State Billings. She finished the season as the team’s leading scorer with 11.6 points per game, shooting 48.1 percent (50-of-104) from the three-point line, the highest single-season three-point field goal percentage in women’s basketball history.
Morrison shares this week’s honor with Jennifer Williams of Northwest Nazarene, who compiled 29 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and four steals as the Crusaders defeated Saint Martin’s and Western Oregon to solidify their spot in the NCAA Tournament.
The women’s basketball team finished the 2007-08 season with a 16-11 overall record, the third straight winning season for the program.
