Falling behind by as much as 12 points in the first half, the women’s basketball team went on a 32-10 run in the second half to defeat , 88-75, Thursday night in GNAC action at the New PE Building.
(8-16, 4-11 GNAC) hit eight of its first nine shots from the field in jumping out to a 21-9 lead. After scored the next eight points, the Wolves went on a 10-3 run to extend their lead to 11 at 31-20, but the Redhawks answered again to cut the advantage to four at 44-40 at halftime.
Down 52-46 early in the second half, Laina Sobczak () started the comeback with two layups off offensive rebounds. Sobczak then hit two free throws, followed by another layup to give SeattleU its first lead of the game at 56-54. After Leada Berkey hit two free throws to tie the game, Jackie Thomas () hit a layup with 11:27 remaining in the game to give the Redhawks the lead for good.
Chelsie Morrison () led SeattleU with 19 points and three blocked shots, while Thomas finished with 17 points, five rebounds, eight assists, and four steals. Sobczak notched her second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Ashley Brown () scored a season-high ten points by hitting two three-pointers and four free throws in eight minutes of action.
Leada Berkey led all players with 22 points and became ’s all-time leading scorer, but shot only 5-of-18 from the field, including 0-of-7 from the three-point line. Katie Torland earned 17 points and eight rebounds, and Vanessa Wyffels contributed 15 points off the bench for the Wolves. In two games against SeattleU, Berkey shot 8-of-36 from the field and committed 14 turnovers.
After shooting 57.1 percent from the field in the first half, Western Oregon was held to 22 percent field goal shooting in the second half, missing all 14 three-point attempts after halftime. SeattleU won the rebounding battle, 44-37, and shot 27-of-36 from the free throw line, while the Wolves hit 32-of-38 shots from the charity stripe as 54 personal fouls, plus a technical foul on SeattleU head coach Dan Kriley late in the first half, were called in the game.
(15-9, 6-9 GNAC) heads to Lacey, , to face Saint Martin’s Saturday, March 1, beginning at 7 p.m. The Saints, ranked ninth in the region this week, defeated the tenth-ranked Redhawks in overtime, 62-60, earlier this season.
