SEATTLE, Wash. - Michael Knight, a former All-Metro performer at Seattle Prep, has signed an athletic aid agreement to come to Seattle University and join the Redhawk men's basketball program for the 2007-08 season, announced Monday by head coach Joe Callero.
Callero also announced that Michael Wright, a 6'5" forward from Lakewood, Wash., who played at Pierce College last season, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Seattle University and become part of the men's basketball team beginning next season.
A two-time captain at Seattle Prep, Knight averaged 15.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game as a senior in leading the Panthers to a 19-7 overall record. He was a McDonald's All-America nominee and earned Second Team All-Metro honors after his senior season and Third Team All-Metro honors in his junior year, when he averaged 13.8 points per game.
"Michael will be a key addition to our team next year," Callero said. "He is a local product who I recruited heavily three years ago. He can play point guard or shooting guard and should add a spark to our offense."
The 6'3" guard spent the 2006-07 season with the Great Danes of the University at Albany, where he appeared in 19 games, scoring 13 points and pulling down six rebounds during his time on the court. Knight was part of the Great Dane squad that won its second consecutive America East Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Wright led Pierce College to a 21-11 record and a third place finish in the 2007 NWAACC Tournament Championships. During the regular season, Wright averaged 16.5 points and 11.7 rebounds per game and shot 56.8 percent from the field (147-of-259). He was named co-MVP of the NWAACC West Region and was a member of the All-NWAACC Tournament Team.
"Michael is one of the most efficient rebounders I have seen in 20 years. He has a knack for the ball, is competitive, and is an overachiever. I love the versatility he brings to our program," Callero said.
The Seattle University men's basketball team is coming off its best season in 38 years, finishing with a 20-9 overall record, including an 11-5 record in the conference that allowed it to earn a share of the GNAC title. The Redhawks defeated Cal Poly Pomona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and put together an eight-game winning streak, the longest winning streak for the program since the 1984-85 season.
