Men’s Soccer play to a 1-1 Draw with SPU

completed the regular season with a 1-1 tie against cross-town rival Seattle Pacific Saturday night at Interbay Stadium. The #5 ranked Redhawks (15-2-1, 6-1-1 GNAC) came into the game as the top ranked team in the Far west region. The tie should still put them in good position to enter postaseason as the regions number one seed and host the regional.
Seattle and Seattle Pacific played to a scoreless tie in the first half. Seattle’s best chance came in the 30th minute when Sean Morris (Bothell, Wash.) ripped a volley from inside the box, but SPU keeper Kellen Rosten tipped the ball over the crossbar for a corner.
15 minutes into the second half Corey Sinser of SPU was sent off after a dangerous tackle on Chris Hodges (). The red card left Seattle Pacific with just ten players the rest of the game.
Just four minutes after the red card, Jason Cascio (, ) found the back of the net to give a 1-0 lead. Eric Forner () found Cascio in the box who controlled the ball, shielded a defender and made a turn before slipping the ball into the net. The goal was the 13th of year for Cascio, while the assist was second of the season for Forner.
Seattle Pacific evened the match at 1-1 in the 85th minute when Jeff Hallenbeck sent a corner into the box. Awaiting the ball was James Coaggan, who used his body to redirect the ball into the back of the net.
looked to regain the lead just two minutes later when SPU committed a foul in the box. John Fishbaugher () sent a blast on goal, which Rosten blocked, but when Cascio controlled the rebound he was fouled. On the ensuing penalty kick, Rosten made another save as Cascio’s attempt went for naught. At the end of regulation the game remained tied at 1-1.
The first overtime was filled with action, but no goals. appeared to have a goal five minutes into the overtime when Cascio beat Rosten, but was called offside negating the goal.
In the second overtime Emerson DeOliveira (Normandy Park, Wash.) came out to make a save on a breakaway by Coggan to preserve the tie. The save was the third of the match for DeOliveira.
had six shots in the two overtime periods and Rosten made four of his 11 saves in extra time, but could not find the back of the net, ending the game in a 1-1 tie.
Cascio, the defending GNAC player of the year has now scored eight goals in the last five games. The tie ends ’s ten game win streak, but the Redhawks remain unbeaten in their last 11 games.
