The men’s soccer team completely dominated Friday afternoon’s match, continually putting pressure on the defense of the as the 13th-ranked Redhawks defeated the Marauders, 6-1, in non-conference action at Championship Field.
took 39 shots in the match, 20 of them on goal. The Redhawks also earned 14 corner kicks, seven in each half. Meanwhile, the Marauders earned only three shots and one corner kick as the vast majority of the action took place on their side of the field.
The scoring began in the 18th minute when Andrew Kreiter () dribbled through the Mary defense and converted from ten yards out for his second goal of the season. The only blemish for the defense came two and a half minutes later, as the Redhawks were called for a handball in the box, giving Mary a penalty kick. goalie Emerson DeOliveira () swatted Scott Kaubisch’s penalty kick attempt away, but Kaubisch gathered the ball before DeOliveira recovered and sent the rebound into the net.
The Redhawks took the lead for good in the 32nd minute, as Cameron Mertens (, ) took a shot that was stopped by Mary goalie Kyle Kovack, but Dustin Allbery () hustled to pick up the rebound and earn his first goal of the season. scored again 39 seconds before halftime, as Sean Morris (, ) sent a corner kick into the box, where Chris Hodges () used a header to beat Kovack and earn his first goal of the year.
While continued to pressure the Marauder defense, the next goal did not come until the 70th minute, when Sean Rawson’s () thru ball found Mertens, who used his speed to beat the defense and converted from five yards out. Just over two minutes later, Allbery earned his second goal of the game off a free kick from 20 yards out, and Mertens ended the scoring in the 87th minute off a nice thru ball by Nick James ().
DeOliveira’s only save came on the penalty kick attempt, but he did earn his sixth victory of the season before being replaced by Max Walker () for the final 16:49 of the match. Kovack ended the afternoon with 14 saves for the Marauders.
