Maryann Boddy Scores Two Goals to Lead Seattle Women’s Soccer to Victory
Sarah Dean also keys offense in win over
Seattle used three first half goals to build a big lead and hold off a hard charging Western Washington, 4-2 in women’s soccer action, Wednesday afternoon at Championship Field.
Maryann Boddy () played spectacular skilled soccer, scoring two goals and assisting another to lead the Redhawks to victory. Sarah Dean (Coeur d’ Alene, ) also played well, scoring an unusual goal, while assisting on both of Boddy’s goals.
Dean used her long throw, literally, to score the first goal. In the 29th minute, she sent the long throw into the box and it took one hop off the ground before bouncing towards the goal. keeper Teresa Fish leaped to stop it but the ball bounced off her outstretched hands and into the back of the net. The goal was the third of season for Dean and not the last time her long throw would lead to a goal in the match.
In the 34th minute, Jasmine Wilson () played a great through ball to Boddy who collected it, made a move to beat a defender, and dribbled it to the end line to send in a sharp cross. Waiting for the cross was Leah Wymer () who one-touched it with her left foot for her 14th goal of the season. Boddy earned her third assist of the season.
tallied one more goal in the first half again using the long throw of Dean. In the 41st minute, Dean’s long throw found the foot of Boddy who flicked the ball over the keeper’s head for her second goal of the season. Dean earned her second assist of the year with the throw-in.
In the second half, the play picked up as Western Washington used the wind to their advantage as had in the first half. Still, would add one more goal in the 64th minute coming from a corner kick. This time, Ashley Porter () sent a cross from the corner to Dean, who shot and hit the post. The strong rebound came right to Boddy who finished the shot for her second goal of the game and third of the season. Dean earned her second assist of the day and third of the season.
Western struck back later in the half scoring goals in the 72nd and 74th minutes. The first goal came on a long ball from Samantha Sommer to Kelly Irving who finished from about eight yards out. Two minutes later, Katie Warner finished a goal as she redirected a Lucy Miller attempt into the back of the net.
After allowing the two quick goals, stepped up their play and finished out the match and the win. improved to 12-2 and 7-1 in the GNAC. falls to 8-5-1 and 3-4-1 in the GNAC.
Kaitlyn Jackson (, ) earned her 12th victory in goal for . She made just one save, but it was a great one coming out on a breakaway chance for Western and tipping the shot over the goal. Teresa Fish played the first 71 minutes in goal, making all five of the saves for .
