Jen Hamann (Colorado Springs, Colo.), making her first appearance in the starting lineup this season, scored early in the match, and the Seattle University women’s soccer team held off Western Washington for a 1-0 victory Saturday night at Orca Field.
With 4:35 gone from the match, Leah Wymer (Bothell, Wash.) played the ball across the goal from right to left. Hamann received the pass and beat Viking goalie Teresa Fish from six yards out for her first goal since the 2005 season.
Seattle continued pressuring the Western Washington defense throughout the first half and early in the second half, earning three corner kicks in the first half and forcing Fish to make three saves in the second half. The Redhawks outshot the Vikings 13-6 in the match, including a 9-3 shot advantage in the second half.
Western Washington (4-1, 0-1 GNAC) gained the momentum midway through the second half and had its chances, especially in the last ten minutes. The Seattle defense was up to the task, helping Kaitlyn Jackson (Kent, Wash.), who made two saves during the night, earn her fourth shutout of the season.
Seattle University (5-1, 1-0 GNAC) will host two matches next weekend, starting with a contest against Saint Martin’s on Friday, Sept. 14, beginning at 4 p.m. at Championship Field. The Redhawks will then face Western Oregon on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m., also at Championship Field.
