Mertens earns honor after two game winning goals last week.

men’s soccer player Cameron Mertens () was named the GNAC Co-Player of the Week after scoring both game winning goals in 1-0 victories last week for the Redhawks.

On Tuesday afternoon, Mertens found the back of the net at Cal State Los Angeles in the 72nd minute to propel to an upset of the sixth ranked Golden Eagles. Mertens sped ahead of the defense to receive a long ball from teammate Sean Rawson () for the decisive goal. The goal was Mertens’ first of the season.

Mertens followed up his performance on Sunday at Championship Field against Notre Dame de Namur when he again scored a second half goal to propel to a 1-0 victory. This time the feed came from John Fishbaugher () on a nice through ball that Mertens redirected around the keeper in the 62nd minute.

In both games Mertens came on as a substitute, using his fresh legs and speed to find the back of the net.

Mertens will share the award with Seattle Pacific goalkeeper, Kellen Rosten, who had two victories in goal last week for the Falcons.

Mertens and the Redhawks now head back on the road for two matches to start the conference season. They travel to Montana State Billings on Friday, Sept. 14, at 2:30 p.m. and then to on Monday, Sept. 17, at 7:00 p.m. They return home to Championship Field on Monday, Sept. 24, at 2:30 p.m., to face Montana State Billings.
