SEATTLE, Wash. - The Seattle University men's soccer team wrapped up its spring season by hosting an alumni banquet on Saturday, May 5, and then facing the Seattle Sounders on Sunday, May 6, a match that ended in a 1-1 tie.
Late Sunday afternoon at French Field in Kent, the exhibition match between the Redhawks and Sounders was scoreless until Eric Forner (Sacramento, Calif.) took advantage of a free kick and scored to give Seattle University a 1-0 lead.
It would be a former SU player that responded for the Sounders as Santa Maria Rivera, who previously committed the foul that led to Forner's free kick goal, would score his own goal to tie the match 1-1. The afternoon ended with the two teams tied, a solid accomplishment for Seattle University against the professional squad.
The match capped off a busy weekend which started Saturday afternoon with an alumni 7-on-7 tournament at Championship Field. Later Saturday evening, the alumni joined the current team, as well as invited guests, for a banquet and awards ceremony at the LeRoux Conference Room in the Seattle University Student Center.
With the conclusion of the spring season, the Seattle University men's soccer team will return in August to prepare for the 2007 fall season. In 2006, the Redhawks earned a share of the GNAC title and won the Far West Region of the NCAA Division II Tournament, advancing to the Elite Eight.
